Valid for every prosthesis

General information

Your prosthesis should always fit without causing any discomfort. Nevertheless, in rare cases pressure points may occur, your skin may become irritated and there may be chafing or edema. Since this can lead to complications, contact your treating physician immediately. You should then make an appointment with us so that we can correct the problem with your prosthesis.

A functional failure of the myoelectric prosthesis can have a variety of causes. The rechargeable battery is often discharged. Replace the rechargeable battery and recharge it in the charger provided. If the batteries are permanently integrated in your prosthesis, charge them at the charging port using the charger.

Other reasons for a functional failure can be a loss of contact of the electrodes from the skin or the effect of moisture. Dry your residual limb and reattach the prosthesis. If your prosthesis still does not work, do not disassemble it yourself, but contact us immediately!

Your prosthesis requires regular care, especially the inner socket. In general, normal cleaning with a damp cloth is completely sufficient. If disinfection of your prosthesis is necessary, the following skin-compatible agents are suitable:

  • Sagrotan spray
  • Kodan spray (caution: Kodan contains isopropanol and therefore "burns" in open wounds!)
  • 3% hydrogen peroxide solution

Make sure that no residue of the disinfectant remains on the prosthesis. If you have any questions about skin diseases and disinfection, please contact your doctor.

Cleaning a glove: Fill the special cleaner into the pump sprayer provided. Spray the glove with it. After a short exposure time, rub the glove with a cloth. Observe the cleaning instructions of the manufacturer, which are indicated on the packaging!

Cleaning a finger or hand prosthesis made of silicone: The silicone prosthesis can be cleaned with a PH-neutral soap. After the cleaning process, the prosthesis should be rinsed thoroughly several times to prevent soap residue from being deposited on the inner wall. Due to the very tight seal between the silicone and the skin surface, consistent adherence to care and hygiene measures is very important. To prevent skin irritation, both the residual limb and the prosthesis itself must be carefully washed and dried after each use.

Warning: Do not treat your prosthesis with harsh cleaning agents or solvents! This can attack surfaces or loosen adhesive bonds. Make sure that no soap residues remain.

In the interest of your own safety, you should keep your regular check-up appointments to avoid damage to your prosthesis. Please pay attention to any changes in the material of your prosthesis and contact us to arrange a repair appointment.

If you fail to observe the scheduled maintenance intervals, the liability of our orthopaedic technical specialist company in the event of damage is limited and may be completely void. Our liability extends exclusively to the product as delivered by us. It extends only to services performed by us.

Reasons for an unscheduled inspection are e.g. increased noise, wear of the cosmetic glove or malfunctions.

Environmental protection is an important concern for us. Therefore we ask you to hand in your old prosthesis for disposal. Thank you very much!

To maintain the function and safety of your prosthesis, it must be handled carefully! Any kind of improper handling can lead to functional restrictions and material defects.

Moisture is not good for your prosthesis. Therefore, do not take it into the sauna and avoid contact with water or salt water!

Your prosthesis is not suitable for heavy physical work. Overloading the hand may cause breakage.

Overheating of the material above 50°C leads to loss of fit and function. Therefore, you should not place your prosthesis on the heater to dry and protect it from the effects of excessive sunlight.

What you need to know

Medical-therapeutic advice

Your prosthesis serves as a functional substitute for active grasping and at the same time provides cosmetic compensation. The performance you achieve with your prosthesis depends on the individual clinical picture and the overall constitution. Please discuss with your doctor whether accompanying therapeutic measures (e.g. physiotherapy) can support your performance, as well as the daily wearing time.

To maintain and improve the function of the residual limb, exercise-friendly leisure activities, residual limb gymnastics and wrapping of the residual limb are generally suitable measures.

If you do not wear your prosthesis for an extended period of time, it will usually be necessary to wrap the residual limb to maintain its functional shape or to wear a custom compression armsleeve.

Please discuss all measures to maintain and improve function with your physician.

Your prosthesis should always fit without discomfort. Excessive pressure or pressure points, irritation, chafing of the skin or even edema are not acceptable!

In case of allergic reactions, consult your physician for clarification. It is important that you discuss all measures for residual limb treatment and residual limb hygiene with your physician.

Sensitivity disorders, especially those associated with wound healing disorders (e.g. diabetic disease) require special attention. A daily visual and palpatory check of the residual limb is mandatory. Even if there are minor signs of skin damage, you should contact your doctor or us.

Direct contact of leather material with injured skin must be avoided at all costs.

It is important to care for the residual limb on a daily basis. You can prevent skin problems by washing with skin-friendly soap.

Special care products (e.g. PC30V) have proven effective in hardening the skin of the residual limb. In case of complaints, please discuss all measures for residual limb treatment and residual limb hygiene with your doctor.

For finger or hand prostheses made of silicone:

During the initial acclimatization to a silicone prosthesis, increased sweating may occur during the first few weeks. As a rule, the skin's perspiration normalizes by itself as you become accustomed to the silicone material. We advise you to use moisturizing care products after the acclimatization phase to protect the skin from drying out.

Attention: The application of greasing substances must be done after the use of the prosthesis, because they can reduce the adhesion properties of the prosthesis as soon as they get into the socket.

Volume fluctuations of the amputation stump are not uncommon. To prevent greater swelling of the residual limb, when you are not wearing your prosthesis, you should dress the residual limb with a compressive material (e.g. silicone compression elements).

Compression therapy is especially useful when the prosthesis is not worn for an extended period of time and unstable, changing residual limb conditions prevail.

Please discuss all measures for residual limb treatment and residual limb hygiene with your doctor!
