Car accident - and 16 years later amputated
Dimitri's new start with a prosthesis
He actually just wanted to spend a nice evening with friends - but then everything changes: novice driver Dimitri gets into a car accident. After several months in a coma, he thinks he has overcome the worst. But Dimitri's left leg just won't heal. It becomes inflamed again and again, and the young man has to rely on crutches for almost 16 years. For the trained mechatronics engineer, it was clear that he did not want to live with this massive limitation. Against the original advice of the doctors, the now 35-year-old decides to have his lower leg amputated.
In retrospect, Dimitri is convinced that the amputation was one of the best decisions. He is now much more mobile and independent, and can go jogging with a prosthesis after just six months. He goes on short hikes with his friends in the summer. Even swimming is no problem thanks to Dimitri's bathing prosthesis!
Of course, the young man needed time at the beginning to get used to his new aid. According to Dimitri, a prosthesis is undoubtedly a foreign body that first has to be trained to handle properly. In Dimitri's experience, however, you get more used to the artificial replacement part every day. Today, he can't imagine doing without his lower leg prosthesis.
When we ask Dimitri how he feels today, he answers with a big grin on his face: "Like a new man!". He sees life completely differently after his car accident. He discovers things everywhere that make him happy: stand-up paddling, going to the gym, skiing in winter - he just tries everything. The optimist goes through life with a refreshingly positive attitude and is happy about everyone who talks to him about his prosthesis.
